Leader's update - Friday 27 February 2026
Published: 27 February 2026
Earlier this week, I was pleased to welcome Howard Dawber, the Deputy Mayor for Business, to Redbridge. It was a great opportunity to discuss our strategic ambitions for economic growth and to show him how GLA‑funded programmes are making a real difference on the ground. It was a pleasure to show him round Ilford Town Centre, meeting local businesses and residents and exploring how we can work together to attract and support enterprise, as well as strengthen opportunities for skills and jobs.
This week, also saw our latest Cabinet meeting on Thursday, where the draft budget for the year ahead was approved. I am pleased that following our lobbying efforts we have been able to secure a much-improved settlement from Government and we can continue to invest in our borough and support residents through challenging times. The budget will now progress to Full Council for final consideration. Read more in our news story.
The weather is improving, a little and with that, our much-loved free green garden waste service returns next week. You can check your collection day online. Green sacks are available to buy from Redbridge Libraries for £2. Please remember to bring ID. Residents can leave up to five bags at their boundary on collection day but do avoid overfilling them so our crews can lift them safely.
This weekend, we’re holding another Community Activity Day in South Woodford, outside M&S and Boots on George Lane. The Healthy Redbridge Bus will be there, alongside teams from across the council offering advice, information and some fun activities too. Please do drop by between 10am and 12.30pm. I look forward to seeing you there.
I also visited the Ilford Community Grocery store at City Gates this week, which provides an incredible service to thousands of families who need a little extra support. The shop offers a wide range of heavily discounted products, alongside helpful guidance from staff. I’m delighted we were able to support its establishment here in Redbridge. You can find the store at City Gates Church, 25–29 Clements Road, Ilford, IG1 1BH.
It’s also tree‑planting season. Across the borough, you’ll see street tree pits being replanted where diseased or dead trees have been removed. This is part of our ongoing commitment to keeping Redbridge green and supporting our environment. Today I’ll be at Fairlop Waters lending a hand as officers plant more trees as part of our programme to enhance the country park. Thanks to a Thames Chase Trust grant, around 6,000 young trees will be planted in three groups to create a new shelter belt behind 19 to 89 Applegarth Drive and 47 to 69 Bawdsey Avenue, boosting biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and connecting natural habitats.
Have a good weekend.

Leader of the Council
