Court fines served to two Redbridge restaurants caught making a mess in the borough
Published: 11 October 2023
Two Ilford based restaurants who left their local area looking messy after repeatedly failing to store their commercial waste properly have been successfully prosecuted by Redbridge Council.
Ali Curry House, and Ceemo Food Centre, both located on the High Road, were known to the Council following on-going issues relating to the storage of their commercial waste.
No stranger to the court, the latest successful prosecution against Ali Curry House follows two others successfully brought against it by Redbridge Council for waste related offences.
Both restaurants were placed under regular inspections after being issued with a legal notice under S.47 Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA), which makes specific requirements as to how commercial waste should be stored.
During compliance checks, Redbridge Enforcement Officers discovered commercial waste bins belonging to the businesses open and overflowing with rubbish, in breach of their legal notice, resulting in business owners - Mr Mohammed Anwar for Ali Curry House, and
Serdar Karakus, for Ceemo Food Centre - being issued Fixed Penalty Notices.
Despite reminder notices, the four FPNs for Ali Curry House and one FPN for Ceemo Food Centre remain unpaid.
Court action was taken against each restaurant separately for failing to comply with their EPA notice, and more than £3000 in court fines was issued in total following the two successful prosecutions.
Redbridge Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, said: “We all have a responsibility to keep our borough clean and tidy, and this includes businesses. The failure to correctly store commercial waste presents a threat to the environment and public health, as well as being an eyesore for local communities. The majority of our local businesses act responsibly and store their commercial waste properly. But for those who aren’t doing this, these prosecutions should serve as a strong warning that Redbridge Council will continue taking tough action against those businesses who refuse to act responsibly and legally when disposing of their waste.”
Businesses are required by law to dispose of their commercial waste using a registered trade waste carrier. For more information go to: https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/bins-waste-and-recycling/commercial-and-trade-waste/
