Leader's update - Friday 19 June 2026
Published: 19 June 2026
Dear Neighbours,
As many of you will be aware, there was a serious fire at Memorial Heights last weekend. I spent much of Saturday alongside Council officers, meeting residents and helping to ensure those who had been evacuated received the support and assistance they needed.
Since then, we have been working closely with partners to make sure the managing agent is providing ongoing support to those affected and keeping residents informed. I know the whole borough will share my relief that nobody was seriously hurt during the incident.
We appreciate that this has been an extremely difficult and uncertain time for many residents, and I would like to thank the emergency services, Council staff and the local community for their response.
A meeting of Full Council took place last night, providing an opportunity to reaffirm some of the values that make Redbridge such a strong, caring and inclusive borough.
We passed a motion focused on Carers’ Week and recognised the incredible contribution made by unpaid carers. During the debate, we heard a number of powerful personal stories from councillors with lived experience of caring responsibilities. These accounts brought to life the challenges many carers face every day, often while balancing work, family life and their own wellbeing. They were a timely reminder of why it is so important that carers are recognised, valued and supported.
We also passed a motion on civility in public life. Tuesday marked the 10th anniversary of the murder of Jo Cox MP, whose belief that we have more in common than that which divides us, remains as relevant today as ever. The motion reaffirmed our commitment to setting the standard for respectful debate in Redbridge, while also recognising the importance of councillors being able to serve their communities safely, without fear of abuse, intimidation or harassment.
Finally, as it is Pride Month, Council reaffirmed that Redbridge is a borough where everyone belongs and where everyone should feel able to be themselves. Our services are for everyone, regardless of background, identity or circumstances, and we remain committed to ensuring that equality, inclusion and respect are at the heart of everything we do. We also recognised the fantastic work of local organisations supporting and championing LGBTQ+ residents across our borough.
I was delighted this week to be appointed Deputy Chair of London Councils. This is a fantastic platform from which to represent Redbridge, fight for the things that matter most to our borough and ensure our voice is heard in the conversations that shape London’s future. I look forward to working with colleagues from across the capital and ensuring Redbridge continues to play a leading role in tackling the challenges and seizing the opportunities facing London.
And finally, congratulations to England on their World Cup victory on Wednesday night. The boys did us proud and gave supporters plenty to celebrate. There is a long way to go on the journey ahead, but it was a wonderful result and I am sure many of us will be cheering them on again next Tuesday.
With warm weather continuing, please do take a moment to look after yourselves and others by following the latest hot‑weather advice on the Council website.
Take care,
Kam
