Community Activity Day brings neighbours together in show of warmth and support

A Community Activity Day on Roman Road in Loxford brought dozens of people out from their homes, all keen to join in taking care of their neighbourhood and each other.
The road was closed for the morning of Saturday 21 June, and council staff from several services supported local people find information or support they needed. People were able to get advice on benefits and financial support, help finding work and improving their CVs through the Work Redbridge service, and the cleansing team were on hand to support local people in cleaning and sprucing up the street. The Healthy Redbridge Bus came down for the morning, and people were able to get their blood pressure checked and have a chat to clinicians about any health concerns they had.
Councillor Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council said, “Our first community activity day was all about everyone being and feeling a part of the community. People were invited to join us, and they could do as much or as little as they wanted on the day. I enjoyed spending time on Roman Road, and saw fantastic community spirit in action throughout the morning.
“I often talk about having and inspiring civic pride in our neighbourhoods, so I was really pleased to join residents planting flowers for everyone to enjoy on the street, whilst some residents planted pots in their gardens. Lots of people came out to have a cup of tea with their neighbours and to have a chat – it made it a lovely atmosphere, full of smiles and kindness.
“In Redbridge, the community comes together to support each other, and I was delighted to see everyone caring so much about their street, their neighbours and to see so many people pitching in and helping to keep their neighbourhood clean, green and beautiful.
“I look forward to doing more of these across the Borough in the future and we have already started to talk about what else we could offer and how we could cover more streets in one morning for example. We will also be following up with residents on Roman Road to ensure anything they told us was taken on board and actioned where necessary.”
During the activity morning, residents were given information on how to book a bulky waste collection, how to book the healthy bus for their community groups, and how to report a fly tip if they see one. Residents found out about volunteering opportunities locally, and about the support they could give to other people in the community.
Residents in other parts of Redbridge are encouraged to look out for and welcome a community activity day in their area. More information will be available on our website.
