Dear neighbours,

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of opening Janice Mews, a new community hub in Ilford Town Centre, just around the corner from the Kenneth More Theatre.

At first glance, it's easy to see a refurbished building. What matters far more is what it has been created for.

Across Redbridge, there are countless residents who give their time to help others. They run community groups, organise activities, support vulnerable residents, raise money for good causes and create opportunities for people to come together. They rarely ask for recognition. They simply care about their community and want to make a difference. Janice Mews has been created for them.

We've invested to transform what was once a storage building into a welcoming and affordable space for charities, voluntary organisations and community groups. It gives the people who give so much to our communities a place that is truly befitting of their efforts.

I have met so many inspiring people through my time as Leader. People supporting residents living with health conditions, creating opportunities for children and young people, helping tackle loneliness and building connections across our diverse borough. They enrich Redbridge through their kindness, generosity and commitment to others.

No building can create that spirit on its own. But it can give it a home. That is what Janice Mews will do.

My only ask in return is that we keep the welcoming spirit of Redbridge at the heart of everything that happens there, ensuring it remains an inclusive place where people from all backgrounds feel able to take part, contribute and belong.

This weekend, many residents will be celebrating Raksha Bandhan. I would like to send my best wishes to everyone marking the occasion with family and loved ones. At its heart, it is a celebration of the bonds that connect us and the importance of looking out for one another, values that I know resonate with many people across Redbridge. I hope everyone celebrating has a happy and enjoyable weekend.
