Get confident online

Computer sessions for beginners

Confused by computers? Need help sending an email? Do you want to find information on the internet? All Redbridge Libraries now offer help and advice in 1-to-1 sessions. These are free introductory computer sessions for the complete beginner. We can help you set up a free email account, conduct simple internet searches and answer any questions you have.

You will have 1-to-1 help from one of our volunteers for an hour long session where you will learn how to:

  • switch on and shut down a computer
  • use the keyboard and mouse
  • read and send emails
  • use the internet safely and confidently

Contact your local library and ask for an introductory computer session. Staff will arrange a time convenient for you and one of our volunteers to conduct the sessions.

Free tools on library computers

We are installing new software applications on all the library computers. These include tools for photo editing (similar to Photoshop), drawing, desktop publishing, and office work. These free sessions, run by the team at, will show you what is available and how to get started.

All the tools are subscription free. They are fully licensed and tested to work on different computers and laptops. Find out how you can add them to your work or home computer at no cost. After trying them at this session, if you bring your laptop in, we can even help you to install them.

The drop-in will help you if you are a business user looking for ways to lower your costs. It can save you money and expand the things you are able to do on your home computer. A single application to do 1 task or an entire system, you may never need to pay for software again.

We have helped people with websites, photos, film and video editing options, office, education and programming software. Let us know what you want to achieve and we will help you get there.

Place: Redbridge Central Library, IT training room (2nd floor)
Date: First Friday of every month
Time: 1pm to 3pm
The sessions are free and open to all, you do not have to book.

The Open Source options drop-in sessions are run by a local company working with people and technology.

Practice your computer skills

If you already have some experience using computers, come and practice your skills on the PCs available in every library free of charge. All libraries offer internet access and use of Microsoft Office and Libre Office. Scanning is free and there is a small charge for printing. You need a library card to use the computers. It's free to obtain a library card, just pop in any of your local library or join online.

If you want to guarantee use of a computer at a certain time, it is better to reserve a computer in advance.
