Check you can join the housing waiting list

Generally, you can apply to join the housing register (waiting list) if you:

  • meet immigration conditions – find out more about immigration and residence conditions on the Shelter website
  • are 16 years old or older
  • have lived in Redbridge for at least 5 years from the date you applied to join the waiting list
  • earn less than £90,000 a year as a household

You cannot apply if another council has placed you in temporary accommodation in Redbridge.

You will also need to:

1. be a suitable tenant – for example, you have not:

  • fallen significantly behind in your rent
  • broken the rules of previous tenancy contracts

2. have a housing need – some examples of a housing need are:

  • homelessness
  • living in an overcrowded property

We will consider eligibility on a case-by-case basis and further conditions might apply.

When you won’t need to meet eligibility conditions

You will not have to meet conditions if you are only applying for sheltered accommodation.

Some people do not have to have lived in Redbridge for 5 years to join the register.

This includes if you are:

  • a serving member of the armed forces or you left the armed forces within the last 5 years
  • living in temporary accommodation outside Redbridge and Redbridge Council placed you in this accommodation

Include other people in your application

You can add other people in your application to join the housing register.

These include:

  • your spouse, civil partner or long-term partner
  • children who are under the age of 19 and financially dependent on you
  • an adult relative who lives with you and relies on you for care
