Reading and writing

Come along to one of these groups at your local library and change the private and personal experience of reading or writing into a shared one. The lively discussions in the groups are fun and rewarding and everybody is welcome from beginners to the more experienced. Have you ever wanted to act but not had the time to take part in a play? Then come along to a new group which will read aloud a chosen play. This group will look at a different play each session and there's no need to prepare in advance.

Information and learning  

Fulfil a long life of learning at your local library by participating on any of the following groups. They are all free and no booking is required unless specified. 

 

Come into any library near you and ask us about 'Learn my Way' to find information about online basics, online safety, finding a job online and learning lots of useful internet skills.

Our digital volunteers will help you to get online and learn new internet skills. 

 

Join one of these groups to learn how to find information about your ancestors, or to share your knowledge with like-minded people if you are an experienced researcher. Anyone with an interest in the subject is welcome. These groups are free and booking is not required.

Do you want to practice speaking English in an informal environment? Come along to a Work Redbridge conversation club and talk about a wide range of topics including health, education, work and travel and get support from our committed volunteer tutors to help you improve.

Digital  

Confused by computers? Need help sending an email? Do you want to find information on the internet? Learn all about the digital world on one of our sessions.   

 

CodeUp Ilford is a mentoring program for adults who would like to learn how to code for free. Once a month we provide a workspace for people with no programming skills to come and learn the basics, with mentors available to answer your questions and help you on your way.

Our sessions are also suitable for people with basic skills who need support to develop them, and even for people with intermediate or advanced skills who just want to come along to a space where everyone is immersed in code! We also encourage it to be a self-learning group with learning resources available to help. Please ensure you bring along your own laptop.

Would you like to learn basic computer skills for total beginners and be supported by staff and volunteers? 

Come along to our new computer space at Redbridge Central Library on the ground floor - at Lab Central. 

You will be helped to use a mouse, shown how to set up and use an email, given help and shown how to socialise online, learn how to search the internet safely and how to protect yourself against threats online and even how to shop safely and do your banking. We use an excellent and trusted training resource called Learn My Way which will introduce you to all things digital in a safe and supported digital environment.

Health and wellbeing

Libraries help people help themselves by providing accredited health information, health signposting, reading programmes promoting learning and literacy, social activity such as reading groups, and volunteering opportunities that keep people active and engaged. We provide non-stigmatised community space, skilled staff and assisted online access, and we can reach out to vulnerable people. 

 

Reminiscence, poetry, stories and more. 

Join us at our monthly reminiscence session. Meet other people and share your memories of the past over a cup of tea or coffee.  Each session is on a different theme. Enjoy looking at pictures and objects from our heritage collection to prompt the discussion. 

All welcome.

Do you want to reduce the risk of falling? Falls are the biggest cause of accidents in the home. One in three people over 65 living in the community fall each year and this figure increases to one in two over 80. Some people are at higher risk of falling and so it is important to take action now. The good news is that there are steps you can take to reduce the chances of falling.

If you are over 50, a resident of Redbridge and would like a review of your situation, please come and talk to an adviser about our services, falls prevention and exercise classes.

Action on Hearing Loss would like to help keep you informed about hearing loss, deafness and tinnitus.

Come along to their free face-to-face information drop-ins for people aged 50+ with deafness, hearing loss and tinnitus where you can:

  • Find out about different ways to tackle tinnitus
