Apply to demolish a building

All buildings eventually come to the end of their practical life or become too expensive to maintain. Whether the decision is to demolish or if it has deteriorated to such an extent that it is considered dangerous, then we have powers under the Building Act 1984 to demolish it.

If you want to demolish a building over 1750 cubic feet (50 cubic metres) you have to let us know a minimum of 6 weeks before you start work. You also need to let your neighbours know about the work you are doing.

Our Building Control officers are responsible for making sure that people carrying out demolition work meet Health and Safety Executive guidelines for demolition.

We will contact you within 6 weeks to let you know of any conditions you need to meet before you can go ahead with the demolition. These conditions will relate to health and safety, environmental and site preparations. We will also let the relevant utility companies know about you are planning to do.

If you think you will be demolishing a dangerous structure please contact us before you submit an application.
