Kenneth More Theatre to welcome audiences back after major refurbishment

Redbridge Council has announced that the Kenneth More Theatre will reopen this December following the successful completion of major building works and refurbishment.

The theatre closed in 2024 after Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was identified in the roof during a routine structural assessment. In order to keep the public safe, the Council took the decision to close the auditorium while essential works carried out.

The Council has invested capital funding to remove the RAAC and refurbish the building, which includes new seating, redecoration and new carpets. This was driven by a commitment to bring the much-loved venue back into use for local people, and make it better than ever on reopening. During the closure, Redbridge Drama Centre continued to provide space for local productions, performances and community groups.

Residents will see live theatre return to the heart of Ilford, supporting local drama groups, schools, performers and community organisations while creating the opportunity for popular productions, including the theatre's much-loved pantomime, to return with a special show in Spring 2027.

Councillor Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: “"Kenneth More Theatre holds a special place in the hearts of so many local people, and I know how much it has been missed. That's why we have invested to bring the building safely back into use and ensure it can continue serving residents for many years to come.

"I recently visited the theatre to check on progress, and seeing it preparing to welcome audiences back made the reopening feel very real. There is a real sense of anticipation building as we look ahead to December, when we'll once again be able to enjoy live performances in this much-loved venue.

"The reopening is just the start. With an exciting programme of shows already planned for early 2027, there is plenty to look forward to as Kenneth More Theatre begins its next chapter and continues to entertain, inspire and bring our communities together for generations to come."
