Celebrating safely: firework safety advice for Redbridge communities
Published: 03 November 2026
As communities across Redbridge prepare to celebrate Bonfire Night and a range of cultural and religious festivals, the Council is reminding residents to enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly to help keep celebrations enjoyable for everyone.
Redbridge Council is working alongside the London Fire Brigade to raise awareness of the simple steps residents can take to reduce the risk of injury, fire and damage to property during the festive season.
With many residents living in flats, maisonettes and closely connected homes, it is particularly important that fireworks are used responsibly. Taking sensible precautions can help protect families, neighbours and local communities, while reducing distress to young children, older residents and pets.
Top Firework Safety Tips
- Attend an organised public display. It's the safest way to enjoy fireworks.
- Be considerate of neighbours, especially those with pets or young children.
- Never set fireworks off from a balcony. This is extremely dangerous and can have devastating consequences.
- Store fireworks securely and for as little time as possible.
- Keep a bucket of water or hosepipe nearby in case of an emergency.
- Never return to a firework once it has been lit, even if it appears faulty.
- Never throw fireworks.
Cllr Sunny Brar, Cabinet Member for Enforcement, Community Safety and Cohesion, said: "Redbridge is one of London's most diverse boroughs, and over the coming weeks many of our residents will be celebrating Bonfire Night and a range of cultural and religious festivals with family and friends.
"Whether you're attending a community event or celebrating at home, we want everyone to enjoy the festivities safely. In a borough like Redbridge, where many people live in flats and densely populated neighbourhoods, it's especially important to think about the impact fireworks can have on those around us and the risks they can pose if used irresponsibly.
"By following some simple safety advice and showing consideration for neighbours, children and pets, we can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable fireworks season."
Tony Jackson, Station Commander for Ilford, said: "We're encouraging local communities to attend organised displays rather than using fireworks at home. If you do host your own celebration, buy fireworks from a licensed retailer, follow the Fireworks Code, and keep fireworks well away from buildings, trees, pets and people.
"Never set off fireworks after drinking alcohol and, once lit, don't go back to them. Allow them to cool before disposal and, most importantly, celebrate safely. We're here if you need us."
