Leader's update - Friday 22 May 2026
Published: 22 May 2026
Dear neighbours,
At Wednesday evening’s Full Council meeting, I was honoured to be re‑elected as Leader by my fellow councillors. I’m grateful for their support and the trust they’ve placed in me.
I also announced my new Cabinet. Each member brings a wealth of experience and a real commitment to serving our residents, and I’m looking forward to working together over the coming year.
We elected Cllr Bert Jones as Mayor, alongside Cllr Syeda Choudhury as Deputy Mayor. I know they will represent Redbridge with pride and enthusiasm, and I wish them all the very best for the year ahead.
The meeting also marked the end of the mayoral year for Cllr Beverly Brewer and Deputy Mayor Joe Hehir. Many of you will have seen them at events across the borough over the past year, where they’ve been fantastic ambassadors for Redbridge. On behalf of our borough, I want to thank them both for their dedication and service.
Looking ahead, next week is the school half‑term. Whether that’s relevant to you or not, it’s a good opportunity to get out and enjoy what we have on our doorstep.
Our country parks are looking great at this time of year. Fairlop Waters has recently been expanded, and Hainault Forest has seen major restoration works, so even if you’ve visited before, it’s well worth going back. If you’re in Hainault, you could also check out the new skatepark.
If you’d prefer something indoors, the museum at Central Library is well worth a visit and is free during opening hours. It does a brilliant job of bringing 200,000 years of Redbridge history to life. While you’re there, I’d recommend having a look around the library – there is truly something there for everyone. Over 1.2 million books were issued from our libraries last year, and I’m proud that Redbridge is the top borough in London for children’s book lending.
I’m no fair-weather runner, but I will admit the weather we’re having makes it easier. Parkruns at Wanstead Flats and Valentines Park are a great way to start your Saturday. There’s plenty more going on across the borough at the moment – and if you’re stuck for ideas, the Vision website has more information than I could fit in this message.
Finally, I want to pass on my warm wishes to those celebrating this week and next. I hope our Jewish community had a happy Shavuot, and I wish our Muslim community a joyful and peaceful Eid ul‑Adha in the days ahead.
Cllr Kam Rai
Leader of the Council
