Leader's message - Friday 9 May 2025
Published: 9 May 2025
As we approach Annual Council next week, I’ve been reflecting on Redbridge’s progress over the past year. Annual Council is a special occasion, a chance to celebrate our achievements and look ahead to the opportunities and challenges of the coming year.
Yesterday, I attended the VE Day event at Fairlop Waters, the site of the former RAF Fairlop. It was a poignant reminder of our history and the sacrifices made by so many. It was inspiring to see so many residents, especially young people, come together to mark this important day. This event set the tone for next week’s council meeting, where we will continue to honour the values that make Redbridge such a vibrant and united place.
In preparing for Annual Council, I’ve reflected on how far we’ve come. We’ve expanded youth services, creating vibrant hubs like the redeveloped Loxford Youth Centre, and are transforming the Wanstead Youth Centre to serve local families better. We’re also investing in leisure facilities, with new gym spaces already delivered and a climbing wall and a Lido to come, providing residents with top-quality fitness and leisure options.
Despite the challenges we face, including the housing crisis and huge funding shortfalls, we continue to deliver for Redbridge. We’ve handed over 103 new council homes at Little Gearies, and we are progressing with the construction of 159 homes at Loxford Lane. These are not just numbers; they represent homes for families previously facing the uncertainty and instability of temporary accommodation.
Annual Council is a time to reflect on these successes, but also to assert our commitment to the future. Redbridge is an exceptional borough, and it’s your involvement, feedback, and dedication that make it so.
As always, we need your help to keep Redbridge safe, clean, and welcoming. If you see issues such as fly-tipping, antisocial behaviour, or vandalism, please report them using the Love Clean Streets App or via our Report It page. Your vigilance makes a real difference in keeping our community strong.
I look forward to updating you further at Annual Council next week, and you can watch it live on our website. Thank you for your continued support.
