Get composting bins for less than half price for International Compost Awareness Week and put your food waste to good use!

Redbridge Council is shining a light on the money saving and environmental benefits of composting for International Compost Awareness Week and is giving local people the chance to purchase compost bins for less than half price.

Around a third of waste produced in Redbridge is organic waste, including food. Households can help reduce this figure by composting, which is nature's process of recycling food and other organic waste into nutrient rich sustenance for gardens and green spaces.

On average, a household can reduce their waste by at least 30% through composting.

To help households start their composting journey during International Compost Awareness Week (May 4-10), Redbridge Council is offering local people an opportunity to buy a compost bin for less than half its original price.

You can now buy a 220L compost bin for just £12, and a 330L one for £15.

Delivery is from £6.99, and one bin is available per household at the discounted price. Please visit www.getcomposting.com to grab the offer whilst stocks last.

Composting allows residents to turn their fruit and vegetable peelings, used tea bags, shredded paper and much more into soil enriching nutrients for flowers and plants – and it’s a money saver as it means less reliance on store bought compost for your garden.

Composting at home for just one year can also save global warming gases equivalent to all the CO2 an average household kettle produces annually, or a washing machine produces in three months. It’s a great way to reduce your household waste and free up your bins.

To help beginners get clued up on composting Redbridge locals can now access Garden Organic's online home composting course for FREE, so give composting a go!

For those who are unable to compost at home due to lack of outside space,

Redbridge Council has recently launched two community composting sites where local people can bring their organic waste for composting:

  • Goodmayes Park: Park Keeper’s compound, Aberdour Road, Goodmayes
  • Seven Kings Park: Park Keeper’s compound, Epsom Road, Ilford

As part of the Council’s efforts to inspire the next generation to continue reducing waste in the borough, school children from Downshall Primary School visited the Seven Kings Park composting site. They took part in a special workshop led by Redbridge Council’s Neighbourhood Engagement team. The keen mini composters learnt about what can and cannot be put in the community compost bin, and even got hands on as they touched and smelt real compost from the site. Following their visit the children have already filled up their compost caddy ready to be decanted into Seven Kings Park community compost site!

The Council is also supporting local people living in flats to set up shared composting bins and community gardens, enabling households who do not have access to a garden to get involved, reduce waste and increase green spaces in the borough.

Joey Ceunen, a keen composter from Wanstead, said: “My husband and I are very mindful of waste and its negative impact on our environment. If we all make small changes to reduce waste, then together we can have a bigger impact towards creating a more environmentally friendly borough.

“For us, composting is an effective way to minimise our organic household waste and set a good example for our children about being environmentally responsible. We regularly used the communal composting bin a short walk away, but we felt that having one directly at our building, The Hollies, would encourage more neighbours to get involved.

“With the support of the Council, we set up a composting bin in our shared gardens, and it has been an enormous success. Not only are more residents now composting their waste, it has also fostered a stronger sense of community within our building. Additionally, the compost helps nurture and grow our shared gardens, creating a pleasant environment that everyone can enjoy.”
