Eighteen new studio flats, with high needs support, developed for rough sleepers in Redbridge
Published: 11 May 2021
A former care home in Ilford has been transformed into 18 new high needs supported homes for rough sleepers in Redbridge.
The Ryedale scheme, in Ilford Lane, comprises 18 newly converted self-contained studios that will be let on two-year leases to support local individuals experiencing homelessness.
The first residents moved in to their new homes this week, with all the flats set to be fully occupied by the end of May.
Each home is offered ‘ready to move in’, complete with linen, towels, cutlery, plates and cooking utensils. Occupants will have access to communal and support spaces, with specialist staff on hand to provide additional support to help individuals move towards independent living.
Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal, said: “We’re committed to ending rough sleeping in Redbridge by providing sustainable and affordable housing and support for those who experience homelessness. The Ryedale scheme exemplifies our approach, providing a long-term legacy of support to those unfortunate enough to have been made homeless. We will continue to work with our partners to prevent homelessness and resolve the root causes of homelessness in the borough.”
The Greater London Authority has contributed £2.5 million towards the project, with £1 million spent renovating the building and the remainder on the provision of high needs support and building maintenance for the next four years.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the borough and its partners have supported over 300 rough sleepers with advice, accommodation and support.
