New ‘Wall of Shame’ launched to identify people illegally dumping rubbish in Redbridge

Published: 22 March 2022

Redbridge Council stepped up its fight against fly-tipping with a new microsite dedicated to identifying culprits caught on camera dumping trash on the borough’s streets.

Launched this week, the Redbridge ‘Wall of Shame’ shares CCTV footage of people discarding their rubbish illegally in the borough - selfishly making neighbourhoods messy and causing road and walkway obstructions for residents.

In a bid to clampdown on the lawbreakers and discourage fly-tipping the ‘Wall of Shame’ invites residents to identify the offenders in the featured footage to help keep Redbridge clean and tidy.

Featuring on the site this month are two men shamelessly dumping a mattress, bags and waste in Ilford Lane, a man fly-tipping a bag next to a street litter bin in Ley Street, a woman dumping bags along a wall in Baxter Road,  two further fly tips by a man and woman both dumping bags beside a communication box in Henley Road, and a man caught spraying graffiti on a wall in Bernards Close.

As well as being a tool to crack down on those making a mess of the borough, the new microsite is also a community resource dedicated to providing the latest news and information on responsible waste disposal and the work being carried out by Redbridge Council to tackle fly-tipping across the borough.

The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal, said: “Redbridge is our home and no one should get away with dumping rubbish on our streets. Our new Wall of Shame gives power to local people to help crack down on fly tipping and catch offenders.

“Working together, we can make it harder for people to dump their rubbish in Redbridge, or think they can get away with it.”

The council has invested in a range of new cameras under the Wall of Shame initiative, which will allow enforcement teams to monitor fly tipping hot spots that have been previously difficult to monitor with the existing equipment. The new cameras enable the team to quickly and easily deploy a camera in a matter of hours to an identified fly tipping hotspot giving the council the ability to tackle fly tipping locations as soon as they are arising.

The Wall of Shame forms part of the council’s on going work under it’s Our Streets strategy to create a cleaner and greener Redbridge. Taking a tough stance on grime crime the council will fine or prosecute any individual or business caught dumping rubbish in the borough.

Enforcement action is also being coupled alongside other council initiatives to tackle fly-tipping in Redbridge, including anti-illegal dumping campaigns focused on behaviour change, community engagement work, free online workshops on reducing and disposing of waste properly, and regular joint operations between the council’s Street Cleansing Team and Enforcement Officers to tackle fly-tip hot spots around the borough.

As part of the on-going work a team of Enforcement, and Engagement Officers also regularly engage with the local community around a fly-tipping hotspots to share advice and information on disposing of household waste properly.

Residents can easily report any fly-tips they spot in the borough online through the council’s Report It page:  https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/report-it/

All fly tips made known to the council are recorded and investigated, with enforcement action being taken if evidence is found. The council aims to clear all recorded fly-tips within 24 hours of it being reported.
