Leader's update - Friday 26 June 2026
Published: 26 June 2026
Dear neighbours,
Today marks four years since the horrific murder of Zara Aleena in Cranbrook.
My thoughts are with Zara’s family and friends as they remember her life. Four years on, her loss is still felt deeply, and many people across Redbridge will be thinking of her this weekend.
For the fourth year, a silent vigil will take place in Valentines Park on Saturday at 1.30pm — a moment of remembrance, solidarity and a shared call for change. Those attending are encouraged to wear white.
Women and girls should be able to go about their lives without fear of violence or harassment. While no single person or organisation can create that society alone, I want residents to know that Redbridge Council works every day to do all we can to help end violence against women and girls in all its forms.
Residents will also be feeling the heat this week, and with the Red Heat Health Alert remaining in place until 11pm tonight, I want to reiterate some of the key advice. Please drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen if you’re outdoors, keep curtains closed on sun‑facing windows to help keep homes cool, and check in on older relatives, neighbours and other vulnerable residents who may be struggling. Further advice is available on the council website.
As temperatures ease slightly over the weekend, it will be a good opportunity to enjoy our fantastic parks and green spaces. Please stay safe, and remember that our lakes are not for swimming — these rules are in place to protect you.
However you’re spending the weekend, please look after one another and stay safe.
Take care,
Kam
