Dear neighbours,

As we move into August, I wanted to share a few things happening across Redbridge and some ways to make the most of the weeks ahead.

For many families, the summer holidays can be both exciting and challenging. That’s why I’m so pleased that our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme is once again offering children and young people who receive benefit‑related Free School Meals the chance to enjoy a fantastic range of activities over the summer.

From sports and creative sessions to opportunities like Rocket Padel, it’s a great way for young people to try something new, build confidence and make friends. The programme runs until Thursday 20 August and continues to make a real difference for local families. If you know someone who may be eligible, I’d encourage them to take a look.

The warm weather also gives us a chance to enjoy our wonderful parks and green spaces. Redbridge is fortunate to have some of the best parks in London, and our teams are out patrolling to help keep them safe for everyone. During periods of hot weather, even a small spark can have serious consequences. Please remember that barbecues, including disposable barbecues, are not permitted in Redbridge parks, and take extra care to dispose of cigarette ends safely. By looking after our green spaces, we can all help to keep each other safe, protect local wildlife and ensure our parks remain enjoyable places for everyone.

Last week, I mentioned our Ten by Ten programme, which encourages children in Redbridge to try ten activities in Redbridge and across the wider area before they turn ten. This week I’d like to highlight one of the simplest and most enjoyable: watching a live sporting event. The local football season is getting underway, with clubs including Woodford Town kicking off their season tomorrow, and Redbridge FC preparing for their opening game next Saturday. Whether you’re a lifelong football fan or simply curious, there’s something special about supporting a local club. It’s affordable, family‑friendly and a great way to meet people while getting behind teams at the heart of our community.

Finally, I welcome the Government’s determination to reform adult social care and build a system that delivers the dignity, respect and support that people deserve. For too long, rising demand and years of financial pressure have placed enormous strain on care services, care workers, families and those who rely on support. Social care touches all our lives, whether directly or through a loved one, and it deserves the same attention and ambition as the NHS.
