Leader's update - Friday 17 July 2026

Dear neighbours,
As we look forward to another weekend of sun, I’m pleased to share some good news about our parks. Redbridge’s nine Green Flag parks have once again been independently judged to be of the highest quality.
Goodmayes Park, Valentines Park, Elmhurst Gardens, Claybury Woods, Ilford War Memorial Gardens, South Park, Seven Kings Park, Clayhall Park and Hainault Forest have all achieved this national standard thanks to the dedication of volunteers and staff who make them such wonderful places.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this success. Wherever you are in Redbridge, I can’t recommend visiting your local Green Flag park enough.
Last weekend, I was delighted to attend the Annual Deaf Street Party at St Laurence Church in Barkingside. It was great to see so many residents enjoying themselves at this inclusive family day out. The atmosphere and food were fantastic — I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.
Cabinet met at Redbridge Town Hall yesterday to consider several important reports. One that is particularly close to my heart is the Best Start in Life Strategy. This sets out how we will work with families, communities and partners to improve outcomes for young children and reduce inequalities. A key part of this is creating Best Start in Life Family Hubs — welcoming local places where families can access joined‑up support across education, health and family services. This was a key manifesto pledge at the last election, and I’m glad to see it already taking shape.
Improving services is what drives my work and the work of the council. That’s why I’m disappointed that some misinformation has been shared about the Redbridge Music Service closing. Let me be clear: this is not true. We are beginning a conversation with users, parents, guardians and staff about how to improve the service. I expect the outcome to be a better, more inclusive offer that reaches even more children. I encourage anyone interested to take part in the upcoming survey on the future of the service.
Finally, I know many of you will have shared my disappointment at the England men’s semi‑final result on Wednesday. While the team’s World Cup journey is over, I hope we can hold onto the feel‑good factor their run brought to the country. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to support the team.
Have a great weekend, however you choose to spend it.
