Redbridge secures £16.6m to deliver over 100 homes for local families
Published: 29 July 2025
Redbridge Council has successfully secured £16.6 million in grant funding from the Greater London Authority (GLA) to help deliver over 100 much-needed homes for local households, through the Council Housing Acquisition Programme (CHAP).
This investment will see the council purchase 106 properties across the borough, with 90 allocated for use as temporary accommodation, and 16 added to the council’s Housing Revenue Account to support long-term affordable housing supply.
The delivery programme will begin immediately, with all homes expected to be secured and ready by September 2026.
Redbridge remains one of the London boroughs with the lowest levels of council-owned housing, which highlights the importance of securing external funding. These additional properties will be an important step in addressing the borough’s significant housing waiting list and reducing the council’s reliance on costly, out-of-borough placements.
Councillor Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: “We’re acutely aware of the pressures on local housing, and this programme is a crucial part of our long-term plan to strengthen housing options in the borough. Through this funding, we can bring over 100 homes into council control, helping to provide better, more stable outcomes for residents and improving value for money for local taxpayers. While we know the journey to solving the housing crisis is a long one, this is a real step forward.”
This latest initiative sits alongside a range of actions Redbridge Council is taking to tackle the housing emergency such as building new council homes, bringing empty properties back into use, and supporting residents into the private rented sector where suitable.
