Redbridge Council commemorates Srebrenica Genocide with special service
Published: 11 July 2025
Today, Redbridge Council hosted a moving commemorative service on the steps of the Town Hall to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Council has a longstanding tradition of honouring this tragic event. Each year, Redbridge stands united in remembrance of those murdered, in solidarity with survivors, and in reflection on the enduring lessons we must carry forward to confront prejudice and hatred.
In July 1995, more than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were systematically killed simply because of their identity. Though the massacre occurred three decades ago, it was not officially recognised as genocide until 2004, with the International Court of Justice upholding this designation in 2007.
This year’s theme, ‘Remember Yesterday, Act Today’, underscores the importance of learning from the past and taking action in the present to build a more inclusive and compassionate society.
Speeches were delivered by Cllr Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council, and Cllr Beverley Brewer, Mayor of Redbridge. The commemoration concluded with the symbolic raising of the Remember Srebrenica flag outside the Town Hall.
