Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre and Kenneth More Theatre partially reopen, as building works set to start at South Woodford Library and Gym
Published: 28 July 2025
Two key community buildings have now partially reopened, allowing residents to return to group exercise classes, gym facilities, and hire spaces for events. At the same time, building work at a third site is due to begin shortly.
Previous structural inspections identified RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) in South Woodford Library, Kenneth More Theatre and Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre. RAAC is a lightweight material commonly used in construction between the 1950s and 1990s. Over time, it can deteriorate and must be replaced. As a precaution, these venues were temporarily closed to protect the safety of visitors and staff.
Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre
Key areas—including the spa, reception, and studio spaces are open—Group exercise classes are being held in Studio 1 and the Sam Ryan Studio. While the swimming pool remains closed, many sessions have been relocated to Loxford and Mayfield Leisure Centres. Class schedules can be found via the Vision RCL website.
Enhanced monitoring and signage have been installed to maintain a safe environment. Disruption is being minimised through automatic membership pauses, relocated swimming lessons, and providing members with access to other leisure facilities in the borough. Council officers are developing a comprehensive remediation plan that includes immediate repairs and long-term improvements to secure the facility’s future.
Kenneth More Theatre (KMT)
While the KMT auditorium remains out of service—temporarily halting full-scale theatrical performances such as the annual pantomime—the bars, foyers, and studio spaces are open and available for hire.
Anyone interested in hiring space for rehearsals, events, or community activities can contact the KMT team via kmt@visionrcl.org.uk or 020 8708 8800. Basic stage equipment can be included with hire, and additional technical support is available.
Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford is fully open for studio hire, classes and theatre shows at this time.
South Woodford Library and Gym
Significant work has been undertaken at South Woodford Library and Gym to enable building works to commence shortly. A confirmed reopening date will be announced in due course.
Until then the gym and studio have been relocated to Redbridge Drama Centre temporarily, alongside a pop-up library offering a quick choice selection of popular books, a children’s book area, PCs and printing facilities.
Residents are also encouraged to visit the newly refurbished Woodford Green Library and Gym, which offers extended opening hours—6am to 10pm on Mondays and Fridays, 6am to 10:30pm on Tuesdays to Thursdays and 8am to 8pm on weekends—as well as upgraded gym equipment, improved public computer access, and an inviting environment for all ages.
Cllr Namreen Chaudhry, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Communities, said:
“ We understand how important these facilities are to our residents and recognise the impact these temporary closures have caused. The good news is that a range of activities remain available at Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre, including exercise classes and the hugely popular spa facility. Kenneth More Theatre continues to operate as a hire venue, and construction will shortly begin at South Woodford Library and Gym.
“We’re committed to keeping our community updated and will share a confirmed timeline for the next phase of works as soon as possible.”
