Heatwave: changes to waste collection during hot weather

Published: 15 July 2022

With record temperatures set to scorch the UK in the coming days, Redbridge Council has made some changes to waste collection and street cleansing services during this period to ensure the well-being of its frontline staff.

The Met Office has extended an Amber extreme heat warning, as temperatures will build this weekend and early next week for much of England and Wales.

The Amber warning, issued for Sunday, Monday and now Tuesday, highlights likely adverse health effects for the public, not just limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat. Temperatures could exceed 35C in London, with Monday and Tuesday most likely to see temperatures around this level.

Waste collection

Waste collections in streets which usually have collections on Monday and Tuesday, will begin one hour earlier at 5am.

The streets affected by this change have been posted on our website.

Street cleaning and grounds maintenance

We will adjust the hours of our teams who keep the borough’s streets clean and greenery tidy during this period.

Morning shifts will start and finish earlier, with a down period in the hottest part of the day.

During this time, they will still respond to emergencies. They will recommence work for evening shifts at 5pm as per usual.
