Free summer holiday club to support working parents and carers on low incomes

Published: 15 July 2021

A summer holiday club for children is being offered by Redbridge Council.

We still have some places remaining for both primary and secondary school children - but be quick!

We are giving priority to children who receive free school meals, although places will be allocated to others who apply if space is available.

Parents and carers can send their kids to the free summer club, which will offer sport, art, music, and drama activities, over four weeks in July and August.

The summer club aims to support parents and careers who find it difficult to provide childcare for their children during the holidays while they may still have to work.

The scheme has just 150 places left (out of the original 1,155) for secondary school children.

It will take place four days a week between 10 am and 2 pm. Each child will also be provided with a free lunch.

Working with external partners who are delivering the Redbridge Council programme aims to give children the chance to learn new skills and try new and fun enriching activities.

Children can take part in sports activities such as football, cricket, tennis, badminton, basketball, dodgeball, dance, boxercise, yoga and footgolf.

Also included are improvised games, arts and crafts, music, and drama activities. Activities for older children include public speaking workshops, financial management and careers advice.

Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Elaine Norman said:

“We realise how difficult it can be for working parents and carers on low incomes to obtain childcare in school holidays.

“This free holiday scheme will be able to give further help to those parents and carers whose children receive free school meals.

“The scheme will be offering lots of different fun and educational activities for all kids aged 5 to 16 and those taking part will also receive a free lunchtime meal.”

Sessions will take place at 10 school locations across Redbridge for four hours per day, four days a week for four weeks.
