Redbridge Council’s Empty Homes Programme returns another property to use

Redbridge Council is continuing its work to reduce the number of long-term empty homes in the borough. This programme is an important part of the wider effort to improve access to housing at a time of significant local need.

Properties become empty for many different reasons. Some are help up in legal disputes or tied up in inheritance issues. Others sit part-finished because owners do not have the funds, time or skills to complete renovation work. Some homes are affected by personal circumstances such as an owner moving into care or dealing with a complicated legal process. These situations can be difficult for owners to manage alone.

When left unoccupied, properties often deteriorate. They can attract squatting, fly-tipping, arson and nuisance behaviour, which can have a negative impact on neighbouring homes and the wider community.

Owners can access guidance, practical help and financial incentives such as empty homes grants. These grants support renovation work and, in return, allow the Council to nominate tenants for a set period, helping to reduce pressure on the borough’s housing waiting list.

A recent renovation supported by an empty homes grant has brought a vacant property back into use. The home has now been refurbished, creating safe and suitable accommodation for local families and giving the property a new purpose.

The homeowner said: “The grant from the Council really helped me, as the property needed a lot of work. It supported me in bringing it back into use and I’m pleased the renovations are now complete and a family is able to live there.

Councillor Saima Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, said“Bringing empty homes back into use helps local people and strengthens our neighbourhoods. This work supports families, improves housing supply and reduces the negative impact that long-term empty properties can have on communities.”

The Council encourages owners to come forward if they need help returning a property to use. Residents can also report empty homes online.
