Leader's update - Friday 19 December 2025
Published: 19 December 2025
I want to begin this week’s message by expressing my deep sorrow and shock at the horrific terrorist attack on Bondi Beach on Sunday, at the start of Hanukkah. Many families were gathered to celebrate the first night when Australia’s Jewish community was targeted. Tragically, 15 people lost their lives and dozens were injured. The bravery shown by members of the public in trying to disarm the attackers prevented an even greater loss of life. My thoughts and solidarity are with the Jewish community, especially the victims and their families.
Over the weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Redbridge Music Service Christmas Choral Festival at the Town Hall, which showcased the incredible talent of our young people and adults. I also visited City Gates Church for their Christmas party. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet local residents and see the fantastic work of the community grocery store and the support the church provides.
This week, I attended the Mayor of London’s Christmas Carol Service at Southwark Cathedral, a truly beautiful setting for carols and gospel readings. I also joined the Disabled Asian Women Network (DAWN) for their end-of-year celebration. This inspiring group supports so many women, and it was lovely to meet their oldest member, who is 95 years old!
It has been a busy and rewarding week. I helped distribute toys to sick children at King George Hospital, thanks to our Family Help team. I attended the Woodford Annual Public Menorah Lighting and joined colleagues packing hundreds of food parcels for vulnerable families. I also visited council staff across different areas to thank them for their hard work and celebrated with foster carers marking 5, 10, and 15 years of service - including two who have been awarded MBEs for their incredible contribution.
This week, we also received the provisional Local Government Finance Settlement. We have fought hard for many years to make the case that Redbridge deserves better, and I’m pleased that following our lobbying and discussions with Government, we’ve had a positive response. While we are finalising the figures, we expect at least £63m extra over the next three years. This demonstrates the importance of constructive engagement with government.
Finally, whatever you are doing this Christmas - whether with family, friends, or your community, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a very happy Christmas and a healthy 2026.
