Water supplies restored as Council continues support after major Thames Water incident

Water supplies have now been restored across Redbridge after last weekend’s major Thames Water incident. The network is stable again, though residents may still see leaks, temporary pipes and roadworks while Thames Water completes permanent repairs.

The burst mains left around 15,000 homes without water, with low pressure or only intermittent supply. Throughout the disruption, the Council stepped in to support residents, delivering bottled water, checking on vulnerable households, and providing extra supplies to Woodford Green and local care homes to make sure no one was left struggling.

If residents spot new leaks or have further supply issues, they should contact Thames Water directly through their website or by calling 0800 316 9800. Any complaints or compensation queries also need to go to Thames Water.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Kam Rai, said: “I know how frustrating last week’s incident has been for residents. Losing access to running water affects every part of daily life, and many people faced days of uncertainty which was simply unacceptable.

“Thames Water did not respond to this incident in a way that met the expectations of residents or the Council. Where they fell short, we stepped in, delivering bottled water, carrying out welfare checks, opening shower facilities and supporting those most in need. I also want to thank the volunteers who gave up their time to help. Their kindness and community spirit made a real difference to those affected.

“Water supplies have now been restored, and we continue to press Thames Water to complete all remaining repairs. Residents and businesses affected may be entitled to compensation under Thames Water’s Customer Guarantee Scheme, with details available on their website.”
