Many conversations with residents over the past few years have come back to one issue: Broadmead Road Bridge. This week, we’ve taken what I hope is an important step towards a long‑term solution.

I'm pleased to confirm that we’ve submitted a bid to the Department for Transport’s Structures Fund for £80 million to rebuild the bridge. Many of you will know how important Broadmead Road Bridge is to our borough and the wider area. Since its closure to vehicles in 2023, residents, businesses and visitors have faced significant disruption, and securing a permanent fix has been one of our top priorities.

Submitting this bid is a major milestone. We’ve carried out detailed investigations, developed plans for a replacement bridge, and worked closely with Transport for London, the Mayor of London, local MPs and Government to build the strongest possible case for investment. We believe we’ve put forward a compelling bid and, if successful, we’ll be ready to move quickly into the next stage of the project.

I know how frustrating the closure has been, so I want to thank everyone affected for their continued patience and understanding. As soon as we hear more from Government, I’ll keep you updated.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of joining celebrations at the 23rd Chariot Festival at the Tamil Temple in Ilford. It was wonderful to take part in the procession through the town centre and see so many people coming together to celebrate Tamil Hindu faith, culture and community. Events like these are a reminder of what makes Redbridge such a special place, and I’d like to thank everyone involved for making the festival such a success.

And finally, if you’re looking for something new to try this summer, pickleball could be just the thing. New pickleball courts will soon be coming to Redbridge, giving more residents the chance to enjoy one of the UK’s fastest‑growing sports. It’s fun, social, easy to pick up and suitable for all ages.

You don’t need to wait until the courts open — we’re running free coaching sessions every Monday evening for the next five weeks, from 6pm to 7pm. Whether you’re completely new or looking to sharpen your skills, it’s a great chance to give the sport a go, meet new people and get match‑ready for when the new courts arrive.
