TfL confirms restricted operating hours for Woodford Avenue bus priority scheme following intervention by Redbridge Council

Published: 7 August 2025

Transport for London (TfL) has this week written to residents confirming changes to the operating hours of the bus lanes on the A1400 Woodford Avenue, between Keswick Gardens and Clayhall Avenue, following successful discussions with Redbridge Council.

From Monday 18 August 2025, the bus lanes will operate Monday to Friday, 7–10am and 4–7pm. Outside of these hours, the lanes will be open to all traffic. TfL’s original proposal was for 24/7 operation, reducing Woodford Avenue to single-lane traffic at all times.

The decision to reduce the operating hours follows a series of constructive meetings between the Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Kam Rai, and senior TfL officials, including the Deputy Mayor, as well as lobbying from local residents. The revised hours aim to balance the needs of public transport users with those of the wider community.

Cllr Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council, said :“As a local resident, I understand the impact road network changes can have on our neighbours. We’re committed to ensuring people can go about their busy lives with minimal disruption. Local residents raised concerns about the initial installation and operating times of the bus lane, and we listened. That’s why we met with TfL on behalf of Redbridge residents to discuss improvements.

“I’m pleased that TfL has responded positively. The bus lane will now operate only during peak hours, with no restrictions for most of the day and weekends. This outcome reflects a collaborative effort between TfL, the council, and local communities.”

During operational hours, the bus lanes will be reserved for buses, cyclists, motorcyclists, Dial-a-Ride vehicles, and emergency services responding to blue-light calls. All other vehicles must use the offside general traffic lane

TfL will begin updating signage and road markings from Saturday 9 August, ahead of the new schedule going live on Monday 18 August.

To further support the scheme, TfL have already adjusted signal timings at the Clayhall Avenue junction. These changes allow more right-turning vehicles to pass through on green and help reduce queuing. TfL will continue to monitor traffic flow and make further adjustments if necessary.
