Leader's Message - Friday 15 August 2025
Published: 15 August 2025
This week, I visited Caterham High School to meet students collecting their A-level results. It was inspiring to see their hard work pay off and to hear about the exciting plans they have for the future, whether that’s attending university, pursuing apprenticeships, or entering the workforce. Across Redbridge, 96% of our schools are rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted. That is a huge achievement for our pupils, staff, and families, and one that reflects the dedication and talent found in classrooms right across our borough.
We have also seen a concerning rise in wildfires on the Wanstead Flats. These fires cause significant damage to our unique local habitat and pose a risk to both people and wildlife. Please remember that barbecues, discarded cigarette ends, broken glass, and litter can all start fires, particularly in dry summer weather. I urge everyone to be vigilant, take care when visiting, and report anything suspicious to the police. The Flats are one of London’s most important open spaces for wildlife and a much-loved destination for local people, so we all have a role to play in protecting them. Thank you to the LFB and its partners for putting out fires and keeping everyone safe.
On our roads, we are making strong progress with resurfacing works. In just three months, we have completed over 40,000 square metres, reaching more than half of our annual target. This investment will enhance safety, minimise vehicle damage, and make everyday journeys smoother. It also means we are addressing long-standing issues that residents have raised with us and ensuring our streets are fit for the future.
We also need your help to keep our borough safe, clean, and looking its best. If you spot fly-tipping, graffiti, or other environmental issues, please report them using the Love Clean Streets app or the council’s website. We can’t be everywhere at once, so quick reporting allows us to address problems more efficiently and prevent them from worsening. The more people who use these tools, the quicker we can respond and maintain the high standards we all want to see.
Finally, as the hot weather continues, please look after yourself and those around you. Stay hydrated, check in on neighbours who may be more vulnerable, and enjoy our parks and open spaces responsibly. Summer is a wonderful time to make the most of everything Redbridge has to offer, but we all need to take care of ourselves and look out for one another.
