Redbridge Council has confirmed it will submit a funding bid to the newly opened national Structures Fund, which supports councils to repair and replace critical transport infrastructure.

The closure of Broadmead Road Bridge continues to affect local travel, businesses and daily journeys, and restoring this key route remains one of the council’s top priorities.

A Redbridge Council spokesperson said: “Broadmead Road Bridge is a vital connection for our community, and rebuilding it remains a clear priority for the council. Residents rely on it every day, and we are focused on restoring this essential link as quickly as possible.

"With the Structures Fund now open, we are moving ahead with our submission. We will continue working closely with the DfT to submit the strongest possible bid and secure the investment needed to deliver this project.”

Background:

Redbridge Council has completed key assessments, technical work and an options report. Following the decision to progress with Option 3 — a new bridge over the Central Line with reinforced soil wall approach ramps — design and procurement planning is underway to meet Department for Transport requirements.

The council has already submitted detailed technical information through the Structures Fund survey and set out a strong case for £80m in funding, including a council contribution if successful.

Funding decisions are expected in Autumn 2026, with successful schemes required to complete works by March 2030. The council will continue to keep residents and stakeholders updated as the process progresses.
