Follow water safety advice and stay safe in the heat

With temperatures rising this week ahead of the May Bank Holiday, we are reminding people to follow London Fire Brigade water safety advice and stay safe in the heat.

Temperatures reached 27C on Wednesday and could peak at 28C (82F) today (Thursday).

During warm weather, please take extra care and follow safety advice if you're going into open water. In the last five years, 96% of accidental drownings occurred at open water sites, either inland or on the coast. Many of these drownings occur due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of open-water safety.

Please also remember to:

• Look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated, particularly older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone.
• Close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler
• Drink plenty of fluids and take water with you if travelling.
• Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children, vulnerable adults, or animals. The temperature inside a parked car can quickly reach dangerous levels.
• Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm when UV rays are strongest.
• Apply sunscreen with a high SPF, and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
• Avoid physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day
