Investing in Redbridge
We're delivering a series of ambitious improvement projects across the borough. These will enhance leisure centres, libraries and community spaces.
Each development is designed to support local growth, improve public services and create welcoming, modern environments for residents of all ages.
Explore the latest updates and see how we’re building a stronger, more vibrant Redbridge for the future.
Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre swimming pool
Following a routine structural assessment, we identified the presence of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in the roof above the swimming pool and surrounding areas.
This material has been the focus of national safety guidance and therefore we made the precautionary decision to close the pool area while we carry out further investigations and planning.
What’s open
While the pool remains closed, many parts of the centre are still open:
- spa, reception and studio spaces
- group exercise classes in Studio 1 and the Sam Ryan Studio
- swimming sessions have been relocated to Loxford Leisure Centre and Mayfield Leisure Centre
Class schedules and updates are available on the Vision RCL website.
Where we're now
We’re committed to restoring the pool safely and sustainably.
Here’s the latest:
- our engineers have confirmed the scope of repairs needed to make the pool hall safe
- we’re preparing to appoint a specialist contractor with expertise in RAAC remediation and building safety
- the process has taken longer than expected due to the complexity of the structural work and the need to meet current safety standards
Next steps
- the procurement process to appoint a contractor will begin in the coming weeks
- once appointed, the design phase will commence. This will give us a clearer timeline for construction
Looking ahead
- construction is expected to begin in summer 2026
- the pool is scheduled to reopen in spring 2027
Kenneth More Theatre building
Following a routine structural assessment, a material known as Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was found in the roof of Kenneth More Theatre.
In line with national safety guidance, we made the precautionary decision to close affected parts of the building while further investigations and planning takes place.
The Kenneth More Theatre auditorium is currently out of service. This means temporarily pausing full scale theatrical performances, including the annual pantomime.
The bars, foyers and studio spaces remain open and are available for hire.
Venue hire and alternative options
Kenneth More Theatre continues to support the local arts and community:
- studio spaces are available for rehearsals, events and community activities
- basic stage equipment can be included with hire
- additional technical support is available upon request
To enquire about hiring space, email kmt@visionrcl.org.uk or call 020 8708 8800.
If you want alternative venues, Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford is fully open and offers studio hire, classes and theatre performances.
Where we're now
We're making steady progress towards reopening:
- the procurement process to appoint a contractor is underway and will continue until January 2026
- a contractor will be appointed in February 2026
- construction is expected to take approximately nine months
- completion is planned for the end of 2026, with hopes of an earlier finish
More detailed timelines will be shared once the contractor is confirmed.
Looking ahead
This project is fully funded, and the council is committed to reopening Kenneth More Theatre as a safe, modern facility that continues to serve the community and support the arts.
Redbridge Cycle Centre track maintenance
Following the end of the summer season, Redbridge Cycle Centre was temporarily closed to allow for essential maintenance and resurfacing of the track. This well-loved facility welcomes thousands of visitors each year and it’s vital that we keep the track in excellent condition for all users.
As part of the upgrade, we're installing a state-of-the-art membrane beneath the asphalt to enhance durability and extend the life of the surface on the top circuit.
To carry out these improvements safely and effectively, the cycling track and BMX track will remain closed during the works.
Where we're now
- repair works on the upper track took a little longer than anticipated due to site conditions, however they are now complete
- following a site inspection, we hope to be in a position to announce the re‑opening of the top track in the first week of December
- communications will be coordinated with Vision colleagues to ensure hirers and users are kept informed
Next steps
We have received an estimated quote for the lower track, which unfortunately exceeds our approved budget for these repair works. As a result, the Council will need to explore available options to fund the shortfall, in accordance with our internal governance procedures.
We expect this process to take some time to resolve. The lower track is a larger and more complex area. Ground destabilisation and movement on this hillside have caused cracks and fissures, which have disrupted the asphalt layers and created hazardous conditions.
Repairing and managing ground movement is extremely challenging. Our contractors have proposed a solution to address the issue as effectively as possible, but progress has been slower than anticipated due to the site’s difficult conditions.
South Woodford Library and Gym building
Following a routine structural assessment, Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was found in the roof of South Woodford Library and Gym.
This material has been the subject of national safety guidance, and therefore we have taken the precautionary step to close the building while we carry out further investigations and plan essential repairs.
For everyone’s safety, the building will remain closed until the works are complete.
What’s open
We’re committed to keeping you active, connected, and supported during this time:
- gym and studio sessions have been temporarily relocated to Redbridge Drama Centre
- a pop-up library is now available, offering a curated selection of popular books, a dedicated children’s area and PC access and printing facilities
Looking for more? Visit the newly refurbished Woodford Green Library and Gym, now open with:
- Extended hours: Monday and Friday 6am to 10pm, Tuesday to Thursday 6am to 10.30pm and weekends 8am to 8pm
- upgraded gym equipment
- improved public computer access
- a welcoming space for all ages
Where we're now
We’re making steady progress toward reopening:
- engineers have completed detailed roof surveys
- funding has been secured
- we have concluded the procurement process and are now in the final stages of awarding the contract, in line with our governance procedures
- work is expected to begin in early 2026
- construction will take approximately nine months
- repairs will eliminate any risk of collapse, replace the roof, and restore safe access to the library and gym

Wanstead High School and Leisure Centre expansion
Redbridge Council, in partnership with contractor Jerram Falkus, is currently on site delivering a landmark development that will extend both Wanstead High School and Wanstead Leisure Centre. This £20 million project is a key part of the council’s wider regeneration strategy for the area, designed to support growth, enhance community facilities and create lasting opportunities.
What’s coming
The new 4,200 square metre building will span three blocks and include:
- a new 25 metre swimming pool
- four additional classrooms
- an extended playground
- dance studios
- a modern dining hall
- a commercial kitchen
- a new reception area
- accessible changing rooms
These facilities will serve students and the wider community, offering improved access to education, fitness, and leisure.
Where we're now
While many local authorities are pausing investment, Redbridge is pressing ahead with its plans.
This is a complex project that was conceived several years ago. Construction is underway, with recent developments including:
- enhancements to the original design to incorporate state-of-the-art technology
- cutting-edge IT suite developed in collaboration with Wanstead High School
- a new safety system for public use of the swimming pool
- specialist art studios and modern dining spaces added to the plan
To properly implement these significant upgrades, as well as navigate delays relating to the build programme and challenging ground conditions found on site, the project is now scheduled for completion in Summer 2026.
We recognise that delays during complex construction projects can be frustrating. However, while many local authorities are pausing such investments, we are investing in our facilities and committed to using this time to create a landmark development that will serve the community for decades to come.

A new skatepark for Hainault
A brand-new skatepark is coming to Forest Road Recreation Ground, Hainault. This exciting project will replace and upgrade the much-loved facility that has been a local landmark for more than 20 years.
Why we’re building it
For two decades, the skatepark at the junction of Forest Road and Elmbridge Road has been a hub for young people, home to countless tricks from handplants to tail grabs on its iconic vertical half-pipe.
Following a recent inspection, however, the structure was deemed unsafe and has now closed. While repairs kept it going for many years, the time has come to retire the old park and look ahead to something bigger, safer and better.
Designed with the community
This isn’t just a replacement - it’s an opportunity to reimagine what a skatepark can be.
Redbridge Council and Vision RCL are committed to co-designing the new facility with local residents and skaters, ensuring it reflects the needs, creativity, and spirit of the community.
Where we're now
- public consultation gathered ideas on features, layout, accessibility, and visibility
- our appointed design and build contractor has submitted the final design concept
- preparations are underway to mobilise on site and begin construction
Looking ahead
The new skatepark in Hainault is scheduled to open in Spring 2026.
While you wait
Skate facilities are available nearby in Seven Kings and Romford.
We’ll continue engaging directly with local skaters and park users to shape the new site so when it opens, it will be even better than before.
