International Day of People with Disabilities 2021

According to the ‘World Report on Disability’ the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that roughly 15% of the world’s population are considered to have some form of disability. However, the specific needs and requirements of people with disabilities are not always catered to by the society they live in.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) is due to take place on Friday 3 December 2021 and aims to promote equality for people with disabilities in all areas of society by breaking down any barriers to inclusion.

If you are interested in taking part in any of the events this week, then please see below for further details on how you can get involved.

Hosted by Diversity and Inclusion Community

Hear from decorated Paralympian swimmer Lakeisha Patterson OAM, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy from birth and has overcome many obstacles and is a glowing example of what can be achieved with pure grit and determination.

Wheelchair basketball player Hannah Dodd could ride a horse before she could walk, as the Paralympian was born with sacral agenesis and spina bifida with upper limb dystonia. Her favourite quote is ‘the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle’, this is clearly serving her well as she transitioned from a distinguished equestrian career to take up basketball.

We’re also pleased to have Michele Nealon from the Australian Network on Disability join us for the launch as she’s been integral to the development of our Disability Inclusion Action Plan.
