Offensive waste collection (clinical waste)

Offensive waste was previously called Clinical waste.

We collect offensive waste bags and sharps containers free of charge from residents' homes.

For businesses, care homes, and residential homes, we offer this service for a fee.

Offensive waste you can put in your wheelie bin

You can put the below waste in your black wheelie bin:

  • wax strips and dressings
  • nappies
  • incontinence pads
  • used sanitary products (period pads or tampons)

If no infection is present, make sure to double bag and put it inside your black refuse sacks. Then place this inside your black wheelie bin.

Offensive waste we do not collect

  • offensive waste from healthcare settings, such as blood and body fluids
  • chemicals and medicines
  • infectious waste: Waste suspected or known to be infectious
  • non-medical or non-hygiene related items

How to get rid of offensive waste

We collect offensive waste in yellow and black striped bags that we give to you.

Do not overfill the collection bags. The bag should only be over half full. All bags must be tied before collection.

Use offensive waste bags to get rid of:

  • catheter bags
  • colostomy bags
  • dialysis bags
  • urine bags
  • non-infectious items contaminated with human blood

Do not place liquids or fluids in offensive waste sacks.

Make your waste safe

All bags must be tied before they can be collected. Store your bags in a secure, dry place away from children and animals before putting them out for collection.

Sharps container collection

A sharps container is usually a yellow box with a yellow lid. Some sharps containers have different colour lids, these can mean different things.

We only collect the waste in yellow lid and boxes. If you have a container with a different colour lid, then you’ll need to return it to the place that you got it.

Use your yellow sharps container to get rid of:

  • syringe needles
  • sharps
  • broken glass
  • any other sharp item

Make sure the box’s closure device is locked and shut before collection.

Store your box in a secure and dry place. This means away from children and animals before putting them out for collection.

Once you've signed up for the offensive waste collection service, we'll let you know when we'll collect your waste.

We can arrange one-off (Adhoc) or scheduled collections, depending on your needs.

Whatever we collect we’ll replace. For example, if you leave two boxes and three bags with medical waste out for collection, we’ll replace it with two new boxes and three new bags.
