Why reducing plastic matters

Plastic is an important material in cars, hospitals, and technology, but we also waste a lot on single-use items.

Changes you can make

Switching to reusable items helps the planet and saves money. Start by bringing reusable bags, using a refillable coffee cup, and carrying a water bottle to refill.

Refill helps you find places to refill water bottles and shop with less plastic

You can also try these steps:

At home

  • try refill shops for cleaning products or buy larger bottles to cut down on plastic waste
  • swap laundry liquid for powder in a recyclable cardboard box
  • use a reusable mop or cloth instead of disposable floor wipes

Personal care

Celebrations

  • buy bigger packs of treats instead of overpackaged minis
  • choose paper bags with small gifts like sweets, books, or plants instead of plastic party bags
  • pick recyclable wrapping paper instead of plastic-coated, glittery options
  • swap plastic bunting for your own made from last year’s cards

Food and drink

  • cook at home instead of ordering takeout to reduce packaging waste
  • get food and milk delivered in plastic free packaging and reusable glass bottles
  • get snacks in bulk instead of individually wrapped portions

On the go

Bring a reusable cup and most established coffee shops offer discounts.
