Who we are and what we do

The London Borough of Redbridge Council is a data controller under the UK Data Protection law as we collect and process personal information about you in order to provide Welfare Benefit Advice and meet our statutory obligations. Please see below why we need your information.

Why we need your information and how we use it

As a local authority, we have a public duty to identify members of the borough who are considered vulnerable based on specific circumstances and offer them a range of benefits they may be eligible for. In accordance with this, the information we collect is used to assist with the application for or issues with claims for any welfare benefits and allowances you’re receiving or are eligible for.

What type of information is collected from you

In order to administer our services we collect the following information from you:

  • name
  • home address
  • date of birth
  • National Insurance Number
  • earned income
  • benefits and allowances
  • bank accounts
  • savings
  • investments
  • property ownership
  • rent paid
  • landlord details
  • immigration details
  • information about health and disabilities


Who your information may be shared with (internally and externally)

In order to help maximize your benefits and allowances and deal with any problems you may have with them, we may share your information with the Department for Work and Pensions, the National Health Service and departments in the council. We may also share your information with the Housing Benefits section, Council Tax and DWP to prevent and detect fraud, prevent abuse of the system and safeguard public funds.


How long we keep your information (retention period)

We retain your information for a minimum of 2 years after which time it will be destroyed.

How you can access, update or correct your information
