Cityread celebration of Ayisha Malik’s book 'Sofia Khan is not obliged'

Cityread London is a month-long, capital-wide book group and arts and literature festival. Launched in 2012, every year we choose a book set in London and ask the whole city to read it together and meet up with other readers at themed events in libraries, book shops and other venues. About 30,000 people take part each year, with millions more reached through marketing and media coverage.

The chosen book for Cityread 2019 is "Sofia Khan is Not Obliged" by Ayisha Malik. Billed as the Muslim Bridget Jones, it’s the hilarious romantic comedy from the writer behind Nadiya Hussain's bestselling ‘The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters’. Sofia Khan is single once more after her sort-of-boyfriend proves just a little too close to his parents. And she'd be happy that way too if her boss hadn't asked her to write a book about the weird and wonderful world of Muslim dating. Of course, even though she definitely isn't looking for love, to write the book she does need to do a little research . . .

Ayisha was a WH Smith Fresh Talent Pick and contributed to the anthology A Change is Gonna Come (Stripes Publishing. Her third novel ‘This Green and Pleasant Land’ publishes in hardback in June 2019.

Over the centuries, diarists have chronicled London in both triumph and disaster, recording the great events and the everyday. They have captured the City in all its aspects and all its moods. Nick Dobson takes an illustrated look at various moods of London as seen through the eyes of diarists both the famous and the hitherto unknown.
