Trading Standards stamp of approval

Local businesses can now set themselves apart from the rest with a Trading Standards stamp of approval.

The national Buy With Confidence scheme awards a Trading Standards ‘approval’ of businesses who meet a strict level of service and commit to trading fairly.

Businesses can apply or be recommended to join the scheme and must pass a set of detailed background checks before being approved. Each applicant will have their complaints history reviewed and will receive a visit from the Trading Standards team, who will check the business premises and offer advice to help improve customer service.

Businesses will need to agree to abide by the scheme's code of conduct and references from customers will be looked at. A criminal records disclosure may also be required where businesses are working in or around a consumer’s home.

Buy With Confidence members receive access to standard documentation, promotional materials and to feedback provided by the public. They will also get on-going support and advice from a Trading Standards personnel, legislative advice and help and mediation during customer disputes.

Councillor Sheila Bain, Cabinet member for civic pride said, “We work hard to protect residents and deter rogue traders and this Buy With Confidence trading standards approval scheme will help us to continue to do this.

“This is a great scheme for businesses to be members of and an excellent resource for residents who will feel more confident when hiring trades people.”

Trading standards approved businesses are listed on the Buy With Confidence website, searchable by area and type of service or product.
