New Changing Places facility opens in Ilford’s shopping mall

A new Changing Places facility is now open in Ilford – thanks to funding from Redbridge Council.
The toilet will help meet the specialised needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and those with physical disabilities such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis.
The Exchange is also investing £600K in a new high-quality family room on Level 1 of the mall, which will house the Changing Places facility.
The fit out has been made possible with a contribution of £60K from the Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which is used to improve local areas through community projects.
Changing Places toilets are wheelchair accessible and offer a height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a ceiling track hoist, and plenty of space for carers.
Leader of the Council Cllr Jas Athwal, said: “I am delighted that this much-needed town centre facility is now complete, thanks to the £60,000 funding from the Council. It will be a huge benefit to disabled visitors and their carers who can be reassured that the correct facilities are in place to support their needs.”
Cllr Kam Rai, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “I was troubled to find we did not have this type of facility for our disabled residents and visitors and I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to partner with the Exchange to deliver this Changing Places in Redbridge. It’s an accessible space, being incorporated into the family room in the Exchange and is a vital resource in allowing those who are disabled greater freedom and easier access to the town centre.”
Debbie Huntly, Marketing Manager for the Exchange Ilford, said: “Exchange Ilford is excited to be launching the new changing places toilet in the centre and to be the first in Ilford to offer these best in class facilities. It is a privilege to have worked alongside the council and Changing Places to help make this project a reality.”
