Swimmers and sports enthusiasts in Redbridge are set for a pre-summer boost as work to build a new public pool and leisure complex at Mayfield School nears completion.
The first-class facilities at Mayfield Leisure Centre will include a six lane 25 metre pool with spectator seating, multi-purpose studio, 40 station hi-tech gym and a changing village.
Leader of the Council Cllr Jas Athwal today took a tour of the facility, where building work is due to be completed in May. He said: “I am ambitious for Redbridge and promised we would deliver the very best swimming and sports provision for our residents. With the completion of these impressive facilities, alongside our refurbishment of Loxford School pool and plans for a state-of-the-art pool and gym complex at Wanstead High School, we are without a doubt delivering on our pledge.”
Redbridge Council has invested £4M in the centre, with an additional National Lottery award of £750,000 from the Sport England Strategic Facilities Fund.
The complex will be operated by Vision, the council’s leisure partner who are developing a programme to meet the needs of the local community.
It will be open to the public from 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm at weekends.
A range of classes from Yoga to Box-fit, Zumba to Body Max will be on offer alongside specialist sessions for youth fitness and active lifestyles.
The swimming programme will include general, women, family, adult and disability sessions.
Cllr Athwal added: “The sheer scale and quality of the facilities and the programme of activities is hugely impressive. Helping people take control of their health and wellbeing is very important and I’m very proud of the work we are doing to deliver the first-class swimming and leisure facilities across the borough for residents, of all ages, to use.”
Director of Property at Sport England, Charles Johnston, said: “Thanks to £750,000 of National Lottery funding, people living in Mayfield will have a top quality sports facilities right on their doorsteps. Offering a brand new pool and a high tech gym, it will deliver a quality experience to both Mayfield students and the wider community. I wish Redbridge Council, Mayfield School and Vision Redbridge every success when the new centre opens.”
Residents will also have access to school sports facilities run by Vision outside of school hours, including an all-weather pitch with new floodlights, multi-use games areas and a sports hall thanks to funding from Sport England.
These will be available from 5:30pm to 10pm during term time, 8am to 6pm on the weekend and 8am to 10pm Monday-Friday during school holidays.
