Giant open-air artwork from local artist revealed in Ilford Town Centre

A new giant open-air artwork has gone on display in Ilford depicting our shared love of world food.

Yasmin Falahat has created a giant open-air billboard artwork for Redbridge residents to enjoy. Located outside the gallery at SPACE Ilford, at the rear of Redbridge Town Hall, the billboard is inspired by local stories of preparing and sharing food and aims to reflect Redbridge’s multicultural heritage.

Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal, joined ceramic artist Yasmin as the billboard was installed, last week.

Titled With these hands, the artwork, which will be on display for the next six months, depicts images of Yasmin's fruit and vegetable ceramic pieces and celebrates our reconnection with family and friends as we gradually emerge from lockdown.

Yasmin explained how she makes her ceramic pieces:

"I collect stories from local residents, friends, and family about particular foods that have a special meaning to them or remind them of a certain time or person.
"I then make my ceramics from these stories - turning everyday objects into precious artworks.

"Each hand that appears on the artwork belongs to friends and family who live in or grew up in Ilford like myself."

Cllr Athwal said:

“Yasmin is an incredibly talented local artist and her new artwork is a fantastic addition to our town centre.

“As a council, we want to encourage more local art across the borough and opening up SPACE studios, a gallery and artist studio hub in Ilford is a key part of this commitment.”
