Redbridge School Streets public meeting – Wednesday, 10 February

Published: 5 February 2021

Redbridge Council is holding a virtual briefing on the current School Streets proposals on Wednesday, 10 February, from 7pm to 8.30pm.

In 2019, Redbridge Council introduced School Streets as part of its plans for a safer and greener Redbridge at Fairlop Primary School, Barkingside, and SS Peter and Paul's Catholic Primary School/Gordon Primary School, Ilford.

The objectives are to reduce air pollution levels around our schools, help protect children from traffic at the school gate and encourage more children to walk and cycle to school.

In addition to the two existing schemes, Redbridge is currently consulting on ten additional schemes across the borough at schools that have been identified as suitable for a School Streets scheme.

Redbridge School Streets means that non-essential vehicle traffic can't enter School Street zones during the schools' start and finish times during term time. Residents and businesses located within the School Streets zone are entitled to a free exemption. Arrangements can also be made for health and care workers.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Civic Pride, Cllr Jo Blackman, said: "We're currently consulting on proposals to introduce School Streets at ten other schools in the borough. We want to hear residents' views and to answer any questions they may have.

"I'd encourage everyone who has an interest in this project to attend the public meeting on Wednesday so we can continue the discussion on how we can best tackle air pollution around our schools and safeguard children's health."

The speakers at the public event are:

Cllr Jo Blackman - Cabinet Member for Environment and Civic Pride

Steve Grayer - Head of Highways and Transportation Strategy

Adam Warnes - Head of Parking & Traffic

Donald Chalker - Principal Engineer - Transport

Early results show that the existing Redbridge pilots have successfully reduced traffic at the school gate, making the area safer for children, and encouraging them to walk, scoot, and cycle to school.

To attend the meeting, please join here at 7pm on Wednesday, 10 February.

Residents also have until Sunday, 14 February, to take part in the consultation.
