Redbridge Wall of Shame helps focus community action day on responsible waste disposal

Published: 15 December 2022

Redbridge Council recently ran a community action day around waste disposal to discourage fly-tipping in grime crime hotspots being identified through Redbridge’s Wall of Shame.

The council’s Neighbourhood Engagement and Enforcement Team spent the evening engaging with local businesses, commuters,  and people living around Ley Street, by Griggs Approach, as part of targeted action to tackle fly-tipping.

As part of the proactive day council officers spoke to local people about responsible waste disposal and highlighted the harmful impact of fly-tipping to local communities including the potential to attract rodents, obstructions for pedestrians, and making neighbourhoods look untidy.

48 households were visited, along with 26 local businesses. Officers shared leaflets and information on how to correctly dispose waste, and also flagged Redbridge’s Wall of Shame.

The Police were also on hand to discuss any local concerns people in the area had.

The move follows fly-tipping offences taking place in the area, with footage being featured on Redbridge’s Wall of Shame in a bid to identify the culprits responsible.

Redbridge Cabinet Member for Environment and Civic Pride Cllr Jo Blackman, said: “Fly-tipping is a blight on our borough and we are doing everything we can as a council to crack down on it through a combination of community engagement work, enforcement action and court prosecutions. Action days like this are a great way to share advice and information with local people around waste disposal to help them avoid breaking the law. There is also a wealth of waste disposal information on the council website, including access to services so there really is no excuse to fly-tip in Redbridge.”

Since its launch Redbridge Wall of Shame has been empowering local people to join the fight against fly-tipping and help bring grime crime offenders to justice by reporting anyone they can identify from the clips.

This month’s Redbridge Wall of Shame features seven clips of fly-tippers.

In the footage the law-breakers, who face a £400 fixed penalty notice if caught, can be seen leaving their waste by a wall and trees. Bags of rubbish are also seen left by bins, which is also fly-tipping.

Redbridge Council is calling on the community to help identify the culprits caught on camera ditching their rubbish in Redbridge.
