We are the Highway Management And Street Lighting Group and are responsible for planned Roadworksmaintenance of the Highway Network of approximately 550km of road.  This work includes:

  • the management of the Highway Capital Programme involving the Resurfacing of Carriageway and refurbishment of Footways in need of major structural repairs identified using special annual surveys.
  • We are responsible for the design of highway projects and the coordination and supervision of the Councils Contractors undertaking the Capital works. This also includes the construction of highway safety improvement schemes.
  • We are also responsible for the road markings, which are regularly monitored and maintained in order to ensure that clear and safe guidance is provided for all road users in accordance with the Traffic Regulations.
  • We are responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of the Boroughs public lighting and road signs network. Our aim is to provide a safe environment for all using the Boroughs roads, footpaths, housing estates, parks and subways.  In total we are responsible for the maintenance of approximately 19,750 Street Lights and over 6,000 illuminated signs and bollards.
