Day nurseries provide full time care, education and play for
children up to five years. Part time places may also be
available.
Some nurseries have places for babies and a few nurseries offer
a before and after school service. Nurseries usually offer care
throughout the year (except public holidays). They may be privately
run or organised by voluntary or community groups. Neighbourhood
Nurseries are funded by the government to provide high quality
childcare with subsidised places for families living in their
catchment area. Children's Centres include childcare as well as a
range of other services for children and families.
All day nurseries are registered and inspected by Ofsted and
have to meet the National Day Care Standards. The manager and at
least half of the staff in a day nursery must hold a childcare
qualification.
Families Information Direct can send you a list of all nurseries
in your area along with our Choosing a Day Nursery leaflet. We also
hold information about funding for three and four year olds and
childcare tax credits.
The lists we provide include contact telephone numbers, opening
hours and prices. All nurseries have their own information leaflets
that they will send to you giving you detailed information about
the service they provide.
