Make a Difference Week 2008

What a difference a week can make!

Get ready for this year's Make a Difference Week  because its packed full of fun and informative events which will demonstrate how the quality of life for everyone in the Borough is being improved.

This year's MADW will run from Saturday 11 October to Saturday 18 October and marks the sixth year of the Redbridge Strategic Partnership's (RSP) Community Strategy 'Shaping our Future Together'.

'Shaping our Future Together'

'Shaping our Future Together' sets out a 10-year plan of how the RSP will work together to continue to make Redbridge a better place to live and how it will respond to residents' concerns and hopes for the future.

The RSP brings together different parts of the public sector including the Council and Primary Care Trust as well as the private, business, community and voluntary sectors to support each other and work together to bring about change.

The aim of the week is to showcase and celebrate the existing achievements of all the partners and highlight the role that the RSP plays in improving services and making Redbridge a better place for everyone who lives, visits or works here.

Packed week of events

This year there is a packed week of events ranging from:

  • cultural awareness days
  • community craft events
  • health and wellbeing fairs
  • talent shows
  • recycling roadshow
  •  conferences, book signings and story-telling.

This year MADW will also play host to the Safer Communities Awards which will recognise and celebrate the contribution that businesses and other individuals and groups have made to ensuring the Borough is a safer place.

Chris Kapnisis, Community Development Director at The Bridge - a local charity which involves local people in positive activities and supports them to make a difference in their local community - has been part of Make a Difference Week for a number of years.

He said, "The week is really beneficial because it allows volunteers and members of the local community to make that link to the Council and other partners.

"Events like this have led to a number of improvements "

"It also enables us to hold events like the family fun day and involve local residents and empower them to take ownership of their local area. Events like this have led to a number of improvements on the nearby Orchard Estate."

Cllr Alan Weinberg, Leader of the Council, said, "Make a Difference Week has gone from strength to strength over the past five years, with thousands of people turning out to play their part in making Redbridge a great place to live.

"Each year we try to highlight the amazing achievements of all involved and gear ourselves up for another exciting year. Many of the events will make a lasting mark on the lives of residents and visitors so we would like to encourage as many people as possible to play their part."
