As we move from Spring into Summer, the Redbridge Museum is proud to present an exhibition which takes Redbridge's community through a voyage of discovery and heritage.

Asian Roots

Monday 20 April to Saturday 13 June 2009

This unique oral history exhibition has been created by Redbridge Museum in association with the Community Development Institute as part of the Asian Roots Project. Come along and discover the wealth of experiences and stories surrounding South Asian heritage, all told in the subject’s own voices.

Background:

The Asian Roots Project was created by the Community Development Institute and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, in partnership with Redbridge Museum. It aims at gaining a greater understanding of the Asian communities in Redbridge and throughout the UK, both for the Asian communities and for the wider community.

Community Development Institute is a voluntary organisation that provides training opportunities for the local community and during 2008 and the early part of 2009, CDI interviewed 17 people of Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani origin who reside in and around Redbridge to assist them in creating this sensitively created exhibition.

Accompanying displays show the influence of music, fashion, family life, religion and education on different generations of the South Asian community. In addition, the project provides a snapshot of some of the communities that make up around 25% of Redbridge’s population and celebrates the skills that the volunteers involved have developed.
