Black and white photo of coupleEvery October, Redbridge celebrates Black History Month to recognise the cultural diversity that is present in the community. The aim is to help to keep black heritage alive, embrace ethnic traditions and to highlight the contributions of African, Caribbean and Asian figures throughout history.

Black History Month has been developed as a public education initiative, targeting young ethnic minority people in the first instance and then the general public nationally.  It provides role models, empowers the community and recognises the value of ethnic diversity. This year is no exception -look out for the many events that have been planned with our partners. We hope that you will be inspired and learn from what you will see, hear and do!

Black History Month 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the arrival of SS Empire Windrush - the ship which transported West Indians to the United Kingdom.

More details will be available in September 2009.
