Redbridge Handyperson Scheme
The handyperson scheme aims to provide a
service to vulnerable homeowners and private sector
tenants. The main aim of the scheme is to improve
health and safety for occupiers and visitors, by providing odd jobs
or minor repairs and improvements to their home.
How much will it cost?
- there will be no charge for the handyperson’s
work-time;
- clients not on
benefit will be required to pay a standard £10 call out charge and
also provide or pay for the materials.
Who is the scheme for?
The scheme is for homeowners and private sector
tenants who meet the criteria:
- 60 years of age or over;
- are on benefit(s) and have
children up to 18 years in full-time education and living at the
premises;
- has an older person (over 60
years) in the household;
- has a disability or long
term medical condition that prevents him/her from carrying out the
work (minor repair/odd job);
- are on benefit(s) and have recently
(within 6 months), moved into settled or move-on accommodation
having previously been in an institution and/or schemes for
example: care leavers, teenage parents, those fleeing domestic
violence and ex-rough sleepers.
Private sector tenants can only make a
request for work that the landlord is not responsible for, but has
given permission to carry out.
What areas the scheme will
provide assistance in?
Below is a shortlist of services available
under the scheme:
- changing light bulbs, fitting smoke
alarms;
- works to prevent trips and falls such as
securing trailing wires and fitting stair rails;
- minor adaptations such as fitting grab
rails;
- works to improve security such as fitting
chains and spy-holes;
- minor water leaks, changing tap washers;
